FAQ

Is mould bad for my health?

While small areas of mould on tile grout are unlikely to cause any harm, large outbreaks on walls and ceilings are proven to cause harm to humans. The NHS states “…if you have damp and mould in your home you’re more likely to have respiratory problems, respiratory infectionsallergies or asthma. Damp and mould can also affect the immune system.”

On a personal note the owner of Ministry of Mould’s young children were both hopsitalised with bronchiolitis due to mould growth in their home. This was before he knew the dangers of mould and a large motivation for setting up a mould remediation company.

I'm renting my home - help!

Currently in the UK the law is undergoing significant changes to force landlords to take reasonable steps to prevent damp and mould in a property.

We are able to provide to non-invasive surveys and mould testing for tenants. Unfortunately, we cannot carry out mould remediation without your landlords permission, regardless of who pays.

As a tenant you are responsible for doing your part to prevent mould. There is no set rule on who should pay and the best advice is to have a sensible discussion with your landlord. If your landlord is not sure how to solve the issues then ask them to contact us and we will carry out a survey.

The Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act puts duties onto the landlord in respect of damp and mould.

The housing ombudsman has released several key papers which explain that the tenants should no longer be told that the mould is down to lifestyle.

Why did you start a mould remediation company?

Ministry of Mould was started by me, Tom Dear, an asthma sufferer who worked for 8 years in the general damp proofing and waterproofing industry.

The consensus amoung my fellow damp experts was that mould was harmless and 'those Americans are mad'. I always knew that this belief was wrong, my eyes itching every time I entered a mouldy building demonstrated very clearly that something was going on.

My son has always suffered with asthma and so as my kids have grown, I've found that monitoring my indoor environment has become more and more of an obsession.

In 2022 Ministry of Mould was launched, initially with a range of anti-mould paints, then as time progressed the offering has expanded to help more people eliminate mould and reclaim their health.

Where do you cover?

We cover most of the southern part of England and south Wales. Essentially, we cover everywhere south of Birmingham.

This includes:

London, Bristol, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Southampton, Exeter, Plymouth, Truro, Dorchester, Swindon, Reading, Slough, Yeovil, Worthing, Oxford, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Cardiff, Newport, Worcester and Birmingham.

What causes mould?

There are many causes of mould but the main driver is the presence of moisture, humidity and dampness in a building.

In the UK, particularly the South West and Wales, we have very wet weather with long periods of cold and humid weather. These conditions can lead to mould growing on walls, windows, ceiling and hidden places throughout a house.

As part of any mould removal we inspect the property for any issues which may be causing mould and can provide recommendations for work required.

How much does mould removal cost?

Exact prices are hard to give without knowing a bit about the property.

Our quote process is fast and easy with most people getting a quote within 24 hours of contacting us.
